Isolínea

Did it shake?

  • Was it close?
  • Was it strong?
  • Will there be more?

Isolínea answers those questions for your spot on the map as soon as USGS, EMSC and GEOFON publish the earthquake, and alerts you when one matters for your area.

Illustrative isoseismals around the week’s strongest earthquake. Each line joins places where it was felt with the same strength.

Three questions, one screen

Pick a city and see how Isolínea would answer you with this week’s earthquake closest to it: how far away it was, how strong, how deep and what happened next.

Earthquakes from the past week, according to USGS. The “I felt it” percentages are an illustrative example.

Nobody can predict that. What you can see is what happened next:

What happens after the quake

An earthquake doesn’t end when the ground stops moving. Here’s the sequence, and where Isolínea fits in.

  1. 0 s

While it shakes, take cover. Early warning is someone else’s job

Drop, cover and hold on; your phone can wait. If your country or your phone has earthquake early warning, like OVSICORI in Costa Rica or Android’s earthquake alerts, that’s the one going off now.

Isolínea can’t arrive in time for this, and doesn’t try to. Keep your local alerts turned on.

The waves spread out; your point doesn’t know yet.
  2. +1 min

A minute later, people say “I felt it”

Anyone who felt it reports it with one tap: weak, moderate, strong or very strong. Together, those reports map where it was felt most, often before any agency publishes.

They’re isoseismals drawn by people, really.

“I felt it” reports: bigger means stronger.
  3. 5–20 min

The agencies publish, and your alert arrives

USGS, EMSC and GEOFON work out the magnitude, location and depth. As soon as they publish, Isolínea puts it on the map and, if it meets what you chose for your point, alerts you.

M7.1, 118 km from your point Sample alert.
  4. Hours

The hours after: aftershocks and context

After a big one, more follow. Isolínea connects them so you don’t have to guess: “Possible aftershock of yesterday’s M5.1”, “Followed by 4 smaller earthquakes”, “Swarm: 5 earthquakes in 48 h”.

Example: followed by 4 smaller earthquakes within 24 hours.

      What you’ll find inside

A map you can read at a glance
More rings and more color means stronger. A filled center is a shallow earthquake; a hollow one, a deep one. You never have to rely on color alone.
      Alerts for your point
You choose where, how far and from what magnitude. M6+ alerts always reach you, even when they’re far away.
      Quiet hours
At night, no alerts for small earthquakes. Strong ones still wake you up.
      Back in time
Replay 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days on the map. Optional sound, and a light or dark theme.

      What Isolínea is not

We’d rather say it plainly, so you can trust what it does do.

      • Not an early warning systemAlerts arrive after the earthquake, once the agencies publish it: 5 to 20 minutes later.
      • It doesn’t predict earthquakesNobody can. We show you what happened and its context, never what will happen.
      • It doesn’t replace your authoritiesIn an emergency, follow the instructions of your country’s civil protection agency.
