Frequently asked questions

Why didn’t I get an alert?

It’s almost always one of these reasons:

  • Notifications for Isolínea aren’t allowed in your phone or browser settings.
  • The earthquake was outside the distance or below the minimum magnitude you chose.
  • It was a small earthquake during your quiet hours; strong ones still alert you.
  • On Android, battery saver is holding Isolínea back; turn it off for the app.
  • The agency hadn’t published it yet, or published it more than 2 hours later; we don’t send alerts for earthquakes that old.

If none of this applies, write to us with the approximate time of the earthquake and we’ll look into it.

Why did the alert arrive after I felt the shaking?

Because Isolínea is not an earthquake early warning system.

The agencies need a few minutes to work out the location and magnitude, and the alert goes out as soon as they publish.

What is “I felt it”?

It’s a button to say you felt an earthquake and how strongly: weak, moderate, strong or very strong.

Together, those reports show where it was felt most, often before any agency publishes.

Only totals by area are published, nobody can see your report, and it’s deleted after 30 days.

You can send one report every 10 minutes.

Where does the data come from?

From three public seismological agencies: USGS (United States), EMSC (Europe) and GEOFON (GFZ, Germany).

When several publish the same earthquake, Isolínea merges them into one and shows you which agency provided each figure.

Why did the magnitude change?

The first figures are preliminary.

When an agency reviews the earthquake, the magnitude or location may be adjusted; the app shows you the change and which agency made it.

Is it an early warning system?

No. Isolínea informs you after the earthquake, once the agencies publish it, usually 5 to 20 minutes later.

If your country or your phone has earthquake early warning, keep it turned on: that’s the one that goes off while the ground is shaking.

In an emergency, follow the instructions of your country’s civil protection authorities.

Does it work in my country?

Yes. The map shows earthquakes all over the world, and you can get alerts for your point, wherever you are.

Moderate and strong earthquakes are recorded everywhere; very small ones depend on the region, and your country’s seismic network may report more than the international agencies.

Today Isolínea works in the browser; the Android, iPhone and desktop apps are coming very soon.

How much does it cost?

Isolínea Free costs US$0, with no account and no ads.

Isolínea Pro will cost US$2.99 a month or US$19.99 a year, and it isn’t on sale yet.

Isolínea Business starts at US$49 a month, depending on the number of sites.

Alerts for strong earthquakes are never charged for, on any plan.
